Survival Cabin Plea for Efford
Efford residents have worked with artists collective WochenKlausur to form a community group: Efford Community Vision to organise and coordinate activities for the neighbourhood because Efford has no a community centre for people to get together.
WochenKlausur, commissioned by Take A Part, have been in residency for over 5 weeks during 2 periods in autumn/winter, working with residents to develop an action group to tackle the issue of a lack of dedicated community run space in the community. They proposed the building of an interim and temporary ‘community survival cabin’ to act as a central information and gathering point – a focus for community events and projects.
The architecture department at Plymouth University has been invited to submit designs for the cabin. The challenge is to build it from sustainable materials, to preserve the environment, and keep costs as low as possible. Students are encouraged to find ways to creatively use existing structures or re-use material that otherwise would end up in landfill.
With support from Groundwork South West, a Community Coordinator has been appointed to be the contact person for this project, to manage events, oversee the development of the Community Survival Cabin and to continue to develop with the Efford Community Vision Group a source of funding to continue the work.
Building supply stores in Plymouth have agreed to donate materials. Once planning permission is obtained, the design will come to life and the cabin will be built with the help of the community of Efford.
Efford has invited architecture students from University of Plymouth to submit designs for a sustainable cabin. These will be judged by a jury of residents and arts professionals. For details on how to apply go to – http://survivalcabin.wordpress.com/. Applications deadline is April 22 2011.
The Take A Part programme is a partnership between the Heart of Efford Community Partnership, Plymouth Arts Centre and Plymouth City Council.
